Budapesten született, 1958-ban. Tanulmányait az Eötvös Loránd Tudományegyetemen és a Zrínyi Miklós Nemzetvédelmi Egyetemen végezte. Az MTA doktora (2009).

Munkahelyei: könyvtáros, Országos Széchényi Könyvtűr (1982-84), történész, Hadtörténeti Intézet és Múzeum, Hadtörténeti Intézet,  (1984-1993), Hadtörténeti (Hadtudományi) Könyvtár és Térképtár igazgatója (1993-), Hadtörténeti Intézet igazgatója (2005-), megbízott előadó, Central European University, Department of medieval history (1993-2013), professzor, Pázmány Péter Katolikus Egyetem (2016-);  Magyar Hadtörténészek Nemzeti Bizottsága, társtitkár (1989), majd főtitkár (2000-), visiting member of the PfP Conflict Studies Working Group.
